Ebook About One hanged man.Two vanished cowboys.Three hundred missing cattle. The Crazy Mountains are devouring everything they see.Everett Dawson, Montana’s newest Stock Detective, has been sent from Helena down to the Crazy Mountains. Cattle are going missing in the Crazies and Everett is charged with finding these modern-day rustlers and bringing them in.When he arrives, he finds a hanged cowboy and a heap of questions. Was it suicide or was it murder? Why are cowboys fleeing the Crazies? Far from a simple investigation, Everett's case plunges deep into the mountains' dark past.Lawrence Jackson, the bad boy who runs the Lazy Twenty Two, was the last man to see the dead cowboy alive. There’s a whole forest fire of smoke swirling around Lawrence, and where there’s smoke, there’s flame... and maybe even murder. But Everett is drawn to Lawrence, and if he takes the risk Lawrence offers, will Everett find what he craves, or will the Crazies claim their next victim?Book Hell and Gone: Gay Western Romantic Suspense Review :
If you're familiar with Tal Bauer's work you will anticipate some very serious violence along the way into which our MC's find themselves without expecting it to be a pony ride to begin with. You will also expect that those two men would be somewhat opposite in nature, looks and background, but in this one we get the whole shebang. That's because Everett is an Army veteran who is still dealing with the trauma of a botched mission in Afghanistan and Law (for Lawrence) is a burly, gruff, life-long semi-criminal type who is pure cowboy, western Montana style, or at least that is what we are told to expect. There is nothing shocking about the fact that eventually, very eventually that is, Everett and Law will start doing more than a square dance. What is shocking, however, is the level of insanity, venality and pure stupidity that is portrayed among the men and culture of what most readers have never heard of--the Crazy Mountain range of the Rockies. The violence, which begins in the first chapter and continues at rough patches throughout the book, is graphic and at times will turn your stomach, but it's central to everything that happens in this book. In the end I accepted it because I simply could not put the book down. There is one problem I have with this book and I found it unsettling: We really never get a good description of how either Everett or Law look. For most of the book I thought they were completely opposite of how they eventually turned out to be based on one sentence during the lead-up to the end game that let Law's age slip out. What would have been infinitely better would have been to put them on the cover.Otherwise, proceed at your own risk--this one is rough, so be ready. Everything about this book, I adore! The two MCs have so many hidden depths and the most interesting layers in their characters, couldn't help but love them page after page. TB is a master at writing mystery, and the heart pumping action packed whodunit journey in this one was so on point. I dont think I breathed right til the very last page lol. But my favorite thing about this book is just how the landscape was so alive in the story. It become more than the backdrop, it was this living breathing part of it all.For a what should be a short book, this packed on so much! You don't feel short changed, it's extensive and fully fleshed out. TB always such a wizard with words!
