Okay, hear me out... this story is great if you like all the typical dominant male fantasy tropes, but I had some issues that made me feel uncomfortable. This book is like the equivalent of ‘you’d be prettier if you smiled.’ Essentially a very capable young woman who wants to be taken seriously by her colleagues is belittled by a lazy and harassing boss for her looks. Even though she works extremely hard to win his respect he only starts to show her respect after he sees her without her glasses after a rain storm. In Japan there was a recent controversy about some workplaces banning females from wearing eye wear because it made them look ‘cold’ (bbc - source). I can’t really blame this book because it’s a genre wide complaint, even things like 50 Shades of Grey promote the ugly duckling who works hard but only achieves success when the boss notices they’re secretly hot. Here’s the other thing, the main character wears the glasses because (if I’m remembering this correctly) she looks like a ‘middle schooler’ without them. To be fair most countries seem to equate youthful looks with beauty, but middle school is basically when people start hitting puberty... but ah, maybe I’m just spoiling the fun. It’s supposed to be a romantic fantasy series and it hits all the romance tropes just right, I’m just thinking this particular sub genre isn’t for me. Anyway, I’m not sure I’ll continue with this series, but the art and the characters are playful and excellent. It’s sexy and saucy if you don’t care about all that feminist stuff. However, if you’re looking for a manga with romance and vampires where the females and males have a more equal power dynamic then I recommend the excellent ‘Vampire Knight’ series. Midnight Secretary is good, but it just doesn’t appeal to me personally. I am so happy I finally ordered this, I've been looking for the physical copies at Barnes & Noble and Half Price Books and had yet to come across them. I watched a youtube video on different vampire books that people oh so love, and I am glad that I found this one. I've already purchased the volume 2 and can't wait to get to the end of their stories. Mr. Director is the typical vampire, stuck-up, attractive, and a womanizer (for good reasons of course), and the illustrations are spot on, super sleek. Kaya, on the other hand, is the perfect mousy type of woman that most of the vampires are attracted to, intelligent, and hardworking, and the right tool to get the job done.
